Packing for Your African Safari

When travelling throughout Africa, most safaris include chartered flights in small aircrafts. It is important to note that there are strict luggage restrictions to adhere to when boarding these flights.

It is always best to pack less, travel light, and stick to the 15-20 kg (33-44 lb) per person luggage restriction. Guests are also permitted to carry one standard piece of hand luggage (maximum 5 kg or 11 lb).

A soft-sided duffel bag is required. Soft bags with wheels and a hard base are not suitable as they do not collapse sufficiently, making them too large to fit into small aircraft storage. This often results in guests having to purchase a new bag at the airport.

To avoid this frustration, please remember to pack less, and don’t forget that a laundry service is included free of charge at most lodges. Please note that luggage restrictions differ according to airline and destination.

What to Pack:

A few packing suggestions include: light cotton trousers, cotton shorts, light cotton shirts (long and short sleeved), comfortable walking shoes, sandals, shower-proof rain jacket / windbreaker, sun hat, fleece, insect repellent, small torch, bathing suit, suntan lotion, sunglasses, camera (telephoto lens recommended) and binoculars. For winter, pack an extra warm jacket, woollen hat, scarf and gloves. Batteries, camera film, sunscreen and an extensive range of branded safari wear can be purchased from most of lodging’s dedicated Safari Shops.
